The Confederate Navy
Attacks: January 23, 1865
The ironclads Virginia II, Richmond, and Fredericksburg, accompanied by eight wooden steamers,
sailed after dark on January 23. At about 8:30 p.m., a U.S. sentry saw movement in the Devil’s Elbow. Someone
fired and the muzzle flash lit up the passing fleet. Union gunners ran to their
stations and began aiming at shadows in the night.
