Death Waits Beyond the
Rear Turret
Ranged along Howlett Heights, Confederate
gunners could decide at any moment to fire on the
Onondaga, which
sits in a killing zone. It is oriented in the
river so as to offer less of a target and keep its
two turrets clear to fight. Meanwhile, the cameraman's boat crew hides behind
the ironclad’s bulk.
The
Onondaga was the only U.S. ironclad guarding City Point
when the C.S. fleet sallied around the bend on January 23, 1865.
