Occupying roughly 79 acres of rural landscape on the south bank of the Rappahannock River in central Middlesex County, Christchurch School includes the collection of buildings, structures, and designed landscapes that have comprised the school campus from its opening in 1921 to the present day. Christchurch School was originally established as one of five schools in the Church Schools in the Diocese of Virginia, an Episcopalian organization founded with the goal of providing a system of reliable, accessible secondary education during a period of rapid population growth and social change in Virginia. The collection of well-designed buildings on its campus, largely constructed during two major expansion phases in the 1920s and 1960s, likewise reflects the changing values of the school – as the number of applicants and admissions rose in the 1950s and 1960s, the need for more and updated facilities prompted a wave of new construction that evolved out of the traditional Colonial Revival architecture of the 1920s core into a more minimalistic, pragmatic style.
