If you are unable to come to our Richmond office to use the Department of Historic Resources archives and would like our staff to process your request for a geographic search, DHR can provide that service for a fee. The archives will invoice you for the amount due after completing a search; please do not send cash or checks in advance. DHR is unable to accept credit card payment.
Use the form below to request a DHR Archives Search in order to conduct background research for Section 106/Review and Compliance projects. For other research requests outside of those needed prior to the formal review of a project, contact DHR Archives.
Fee Structure:
The base cost for the archives search is $75. If previously documented historic resources are identified within the project’s area of potential effect (APE), an additional $5 fee will be charged for each resource. In return, a digital DHR database record will be included with the search results. All results will be returned via email. If the applicant wishes to travel to DHR and conduct the research on their own, there is no fee charged for the use of DHR computers and software.
If you need assistance in determining your project’s APE, please contact DHR’s project review staff for technical assistance. For more details on the search service, deliverables and costs, you may review this information sheet. If you have additional questions, please contact the DHR archivist.
