The Obstructions: The Boom & Net
The boom of chained masts floats in the foreground while the trees on Farrar’s Island hide the torpedo hut
controlling the U.S. mines in the channel. Along the
water's edge (left) are barrels buoying the net which caught the drifting mines released
by the Confederate Army. An exceptionally polite note from the C.S.
Navy to the
C.S. Army pointed out that the entangled torpedoes were not harming the U.S. Navy but would
pose an extreme hazard to Confederate sailors trying to cut the net during the attack.
