End of the Richmond Ironclads

This evocative but inaccurate print—the Richmond was downstream on picket—comes from the memoirs of the squadron's last commander, Raphael Semmes. The Confederate ironclads were destroyed by their men on April 3, 1865.

The warships still lie where they sank, in unmarked graves beneath the James River.
