The USS Onondaga Stands Watch
In this photographic variation of the previous engraving, the double-turreted
Onondaga
(shown in distance, center of photo) flaunts herself in Trent’s Reach, taunting the Confederates
near Dr.
Howlett’s house. U.S. monitors used the Howlett Line for target
practice and in one session the
Onondaga rained almost 10,000 pounds of iron on
the heights. “Picket launches"
Nos. 3 (right),
4 (center),
and
5 (left) wait in the safe zone behind Farrar’s Island.
