Anne Spencer.
Anne Bannister Spencer (1882–1975) was a poet, civil rights activist, teacher, librarian, wife and
mother—and an avid lifelong gardener. As a
poet, she contributed to the Harlem Renaissance, a black literary and cultural movement of the 1920s.
In 1973, she was the first Virginian and
the second African American poet to be included in the Norton Anthology of Modern Poetry.
