Anti-suffrage advocates also capitalized on political, racial, and class fears still raw in the
wake of Reconstruction after the Civil War and stirred up by Lost Cause ideology
coupled with the rise of socialism in Russia and elsewhere in Europe. Fears of socialism
and federal interference in states’ rights were capitalized on with literature such
as these fliers produced by anti-suffrage organizations in New York. Virginia groups
produced similar publications.
