The Warrenton Historic District (Boundary Increase 2024) includes properties that are adjacent to and share a similar history and development pattern with the existing Warrenton Historic District, which was originally listed in the registers in 1983. The original district’s nomination focused on the governmental, commercial and residential core of the town, the seat of Fauquier County. The additional properties within the increase area are primarily residential buildings, constructed during the 19th and 20th centuries and are representative of a range of architectural styles and forms. Many of the properties within the increase area were brought into the area during the town’s 1959-1960 annexation of land from Fauquier County. The annexation added more than six times the town’s previous acreage and doubled its resident population. The expansion was representative of the Town’s growth during the mid-20th-century, its prominence within Fauquier County and Northern Virginia region, and its investment in public infrastructure and utility services in the post-World-War II period. Included in the Warrenton Historic District Boundary Increase 2024 are two properties that are individually listed in the registers: the Yorkshire House on Winchester Street, and Monterosa (later known as Neptune Lodge) on Culpeper Street.
