The Arlington Memorial Bridge spans the Potomac River on the axis between the Lincoln Memorial and the National Mall in Washington, D.C., and Arlington House and Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. Designed by the prominent architectural firm of McKim, Mead and White during the 1920s, the low, Neo-Classical bridge has nine broad arches across the river and roadways passing through additional segmental-arched openings on either end. The Arlington Memorial Bridge includes a central bascule draw span, now sealed and inoperative, that at one time was the longest, heaviest, and fastest such draw span in the world.
