This Multiple Property Documentation (MPD) Form facilitates the nomination to the registers of the Commemorative Markers Placed by the United Daughters of the Confederacy on the Jefferson Davis Highway in Virginia.  16 commemorative stone markers were erected by chapters of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) along what are now U.S. Routes 1/301 and 58 from Northern Virginia to the North Carolina border. This effort was mounted in 1913 in response to the establishment of the Lincoln Highway as the first coast-to-coast highway and was one of the 250 or so named highways established and promoted in the country between 1913 and 1925.  The Davis Highway, however, was a memorial rather than a commercial venture and was promoted by UDC organizations across the South long after the country’s named highways were absorbed into the numbered highway system.
