Located in Smyth County near the Middle Fork of the Holston River, Fox Farm preserves an Indian village site occupied between the 14th and 15th centuries, in the Late Woodland period. The site holds invaluable information on the interaction and development of regional Indian groups as represented by various ceramics types. Furthermore, the presence of ornaments made with marine shells documents the participation of the site’s inhabitants in regional trade networks with Indians who lived along the Atlantic coast. The site also maintains excellent conditions for preservation and provides information on structures, mortuary practices, and subsistence. The site was documented by the Holston Chapter of the Archeological Society of Virginia in 1973 and further defined by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources in 1994.
